SAN ANTONIO (WOAI) – A 10-year-old boy who was recently presented with a service dog decided to pay it forward by helping another young child in need.
Archer Bellucci, from Cibolo, met his best friend Phish Food last fall. Phish Food — that’s the service pup’s name — comforts Archer as he battles a chronic and painful bone disorder. Even as he copes with his own health ordeal, Archer selflessly decided to help another young child.
Denise Garcia is a 12-year-old girl from San Antonio who could use her own service dog. She is battling B-cell Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma and says she often feels alone, even with her mother at her side.
After hearing Denise’s story, Archer raised $13,000 in nine days to help her get her dog.
“This is a fundraiser for Denise,” Archer told us. “I helped Denise fundraise for a dog and she is going to go to Las Vegas and get a service dog.”
Denise will travel on Friday to meet with the people at 4E Healing Hearts, a nonprofit based in Las Vegas which matches service dogs with people in need.
“With the isolation and all of those inner feelings and dialogue can be incredibly heavy on somebody, especially a child,” says Jeanette Forrey, owner and founder. “Constant through the whole thing, through every doctors visit, through every poke, through every test, to every night through every smile through all the good and the bad that constant friend, this true companion that is here through it all through thick and thin can truly change a child’s life when they are fighting cancer.”
Denise and her family will travel to Vegas with the assistance of Miracle Flights, an organization that makes sure families dealing with illnesses can make medical appointments.
“We basically provide free commercial plane tickets to sick kids and their families that need to travel for medical care or resources far from home,” said Robert Sanchez, VP of Miracle Flights.
